Jackson Polluck fan here, not too offended! (Just terribly misunderstood). Great, great words of wisdom!! Thank you for the excellent reminder that eternity is our True North and following Jesus comes with a cross---not always (not ever?) the easy path in the eyes of the world.
I really enjoyed this, Scoot! The point you made about doing the right thing making others angry and then being happy about the the fact it makes people angry was great. And you’re right! We should lean into doing the right thing just because it’s the right thing and not lean into the anger it brings to some. I feel like politicians and people obsessed with politics on either side should beat that message.
That was an excellent point about the flak. This whole post reminded me (because I'm a nerd, natch) of one of my favorite lines from Star Trek: The Next Generation, one of Captain Picard's speeches: ""It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness; that is life."
That's basically what it is to be Catholic. We are never going to be the dominant force in society--not without society RADICALLY CHANGING. And tbh, being the dominant force presents new and different challenges we aren't prepared for!
Amen. In any event, I appreciated your podcast quite a lot; our daughter is immuno-compromised and we aren't able to get to Mass often; we do what we can with the live stream and the prayer readings from home. One does what one can, you know.
Great podcast. The thing about da Vinci, though, is that one of the reasons why he painted so few things is because he could not let them go. He obsessed for years over the Mona Lisa, never really considering it finished (much to the chagrin of the person who asked him to paint it). Proper formation is super important, but so too is having the courage to go out into the world even when you don't quite feel ready.

Amen amen. Praying for you and yours, my friend 🙏
I appreciate it, and likewise, my friend. 🙏
