Here at the Times-Dispatch we aim To educate and inspire Catholics and Christians on the beauty and simplicity of their faith. We are Peasants—laity who have no authority and no special education, yet who wish to live our lives simply, love God deeply, and glorify God more perfectly.
There’s a lot going on in the world that makes that hard. There’s news that makes us mad, there’s decisions that we think are bad, and there’s outcomes that make us sad. How can we get through the day with all that dragging us down?

Small Things With Great Love
The Peasant Faith was borne out of a dialogue between Hambone and myself. We looked around the Catholic world and saw a lot of factionalism, we saw a lot of chaos, we saw a lot of reasons to be upset. Hambone and I were trying to process all that—where do we fit in? How much are we supposed to know? Is it my job to keep up with Vatican palace intrigue? Ought I read everything my Bishop publishes?
The more we thought about it, the more Hambone and I realized the answer was no.
We can have a vibrant, devoted, joyful faith by simply living our every day lives well, and carefully managing what things we let trouble our mind. If we are praying every day, keeping close to the sacraments, doing our best to help our families and our communities, nothing else matters. What influence can I have over a far away conference of bishops? None—but can I help my friend learn about the love of God? Absolutely.
About the Author
I am Scoot, and Hambone is my brain-trust, friend, conversion sponsor, and co-creator of the Peasant Faith. I am an accountant in my day job, which means I work with numbers and logic problems, and I think about how I can better make myself useful to God, to my family, and to you. I’ve struggled with anxiety over politics, religion, all the negative headlines we see every day. I used to be a news junkie. I converted to Catholicism in 2018, and began pursuing an understanding of God with vigor and enthusiasm, and I found that none of the things I was worrying about really, truly mattered. Having the right opinions on politics wasn’t going to get me to heaven. Learning to detach myself from the world might help me get there.
